Basic Requirements GS-512 Revenue Agent position Human Capital Office Policy: The qualification standard requires 30 semester hours of accounting which can be met by having 24 semester hours in accounting and 6 semester hours in related subjects such as business law, economics, statistical/quantitative methods, computerized accounting or financial systems, financial management or finance.

In addition to the above requirements, applicants must also meet the selective placement factor which requires that, as part of the 30 semester hours of accounting required by the GS-512 qualification standard, the applicant possess five accounting competencies (1) principles of accounting, (2) intermediate accounting, (3) cost accounting, (4) advanced accounting and (5) auditing. The applicant’s education must support possession of the knowledge, skills and other abilities associated with these specific accounting course competencies.

What do they do? Revenue Agents regularly work with taxpayers and/or their representatives, certified public accountants, tax attorneys or enrolled agents in order to determine a substantially correct tax liability. They plan and conduct onsite examinations of tax returns including sole proprietorships, partnerships and corporations. Explain audit adjustments, tax law and the government’s position to taxpayers and or their representatives. Discuss course of action for agreement or disagreement to findings. Can conduct a correspondence exam

If agreed Secure agreed report Solicit full payment or discuss payment options Process payments received Document audit findings by preparing a detailed audit trail

If unagreed Consider any additional information the taxpayer and/or representative has to support their position Appeal rights explained. If provided, determine if protest is sufficient Prepare dispute to protest If no appeal, Statutory Notice of Deficiency issued
