Population in Detail
2
Exponential Growth → model of population growth that describes a population that increases rapidly after only a few generations → larger the population gets, the faster it grows → limiting factor
3
Carrying Capacity → number of individuals the environment can support over a long period of time → includes limiting factor
4
2 types of limiting factors
a. Density-independent factors 1. weather, floods, fires 2. reduce population by same proportion regardless of size b. Density-dependent factors 1. resource limitations 2. triggered by increasing population
5
Population Age Structure
How many individuals fit into a particular age category Predicts how rapidly a population will grow
6
- 5-year increments - total area of all bars → size of whole population - population pyramid
7
Life Expectancy average number of years that an infant born can be expected to live - depends on: * healthcare * sanitation * living conditions * aging * disease (HIV)
8
Impacts on Birth Rate and Death Rate
- access to family planning - education - women in the workforce - cultural beliefs - sanitation - access to healthcare
