What is Juneteenth? “Juneteenth” is the celebration for the freedom of over 250,000 slaves at the end of the Civil War. The holiday is based on events that occurred mainly in Texas but is now celebrated nationwide. The celebration gets its name from June 19, 1865, the day federal troops arrived in Galveston to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation, signed by Abraham Lincoln. Although the Proclamation was put into effect on January 1, 1863, it freed few, if any, slaves.

Why is Juneteenth celebrated?
Juneteenth is a day on which honor and respect is paid for the sufferings of slavery. On Juneteenth we talk about our history and realize because of it, there will forever be a bond between us. Juneteenth is a day that we commit to each other the needed support as family, friends and co-workers. is a day where we all take one step closer together - to better utilize the energy wasted on racism.

Where is it celebrated? From its Galveston, Texas origin in 1865, the observance of June 19th as the African American Emancipation Day has spread across the United States. Juneteenth celebrations are held in most, if not all, 50 states. Over half of the states now have some form of legislation or declaration establishment Juneteenth as a holiday or 'special day of recognition'. With it’s fast spreading Juneteenth is the most exciting and fastest spreading celebration in the U.S. and quite possibly in the world.

How is it commemorated? Today Juneteenth commemorates African American freedom and adds an emphasis on education and achievement. It is a time for rejoicing and reflection. It is a time for assessment, self-improvement and for planning the future. Its growing popularity is a symbol of a level of maturity and dignity in America long over due. From an outdoor cookout with traditional foods to the modern day office conference room, Juneteenth can be celebrated in various settings.
