1 Vocabulary Day!

2 Periodic Table A table of the chemical elements arranged in order of atomic number, usually in rows, so that elements with similar atomic structure (and hence similar chemical properties) appear in vertical columns.

3 Alkali Metals Group 1 Elements on the Periodic Table of Elements

4 Noble Gases Group 18 Elements on the Periodic Table of Elements
Full valence shell Non-reactive

5 Group A.K.A. Family Is a COLUMN. Similar properties
18 on the periodic table

6 Period Horizontal row 7 on the Periodic Table of Elements
Less similar as you move across a row

7 Metal are to the left of the zig- zag line most are solids
tend to be shiny good conductors most are malleable

8 Metalloid border the zig-zag line most are solids
have properties of metals and non-metals

9 Non-metal are to the right of the zig-zag line most are gases
NOT shiny NOT good conductors most are NOT malleable

10 Compound A compound is a substance formed when two or more chemical elements are chemically bonded together.

11 Element SUBSTANCE THAT CANNOT BE BROKEN DOWN INTO SIMILAR SUBSTANCES BY PHYSICAL OR CHEMICAL MEANS.

12 Pure Substance Pure substances are defined as substances that are made of only one type of atom or only one type of molecule.

13 Mixture A mixture is a combination of two or more pure substances in which each pure substance retains its individual chemical properties. Homogeneous: In physical chemistry and materials science that refers to substances and mixtures which are in a single phase. (e.g. air) Heterogeneous: A heterogeneous mixture consists of visibly different substances or phases.

14 Law of Conservation of Mass (Matter)
The principle that matter cannot be created or destroyed.

15 Density D= m/v Ratio identifying compactness of a substance.
