Term III Technology Engineering
2
So What is Tech Engineering?
What is technology? What is engineering? What is science? How are they related? What do engineers do? Can you name some fields of engineering? What does it have to do with you? Write this in your notebook: Technology is______. An example is______ Engineering is______ An example of an engineer is_____ _____ is an example of a scientist.
3
Write the following on your notebook
This week will explore: Technology- Engineering- Science- Fields of engineering The Engineering Design Process
4
Science is the study of the natural world. So why choose engineering?
There are 3 main fields of science: Biology-study of life Physical science- physics and chemistry Earth and Space Science- what we just covered this year. Engineers solve problems using knowledge of science.
5
Engineers solve problems
Technology is products or processes that solve societies problems, needs and wants. Goal of technology is to improve the way people live. Technology is how people change the world around them to meet needs and solve practical problems. They are the result of engineering designs. Engineers solve problems
6
Money -Prestige -Your Smart -Richest man on earth is an Engineer!
-Challenge -Prestige -Your Smart -Richest man on earth is an Engineer!
7
Engineering is applying scientific principals to solve problems.
Fields of engineering: Mechanical- machines Electrical- communication and powered machines Chemical-matter and the changes in matter(atoms) Civil- building, bridges, roads. Can you name another field of engineering? Aeronautical Marine Biochemical
8
Independent Practice Remember the questions at the beginning of the PowerPoint? Would you change your answers now? Please do that now in your notebooks! What science, technology, and engineering is used here?
9
What is a great idea? Engineering Design Process
10
Write the following in your engineering notebook
Design Process Write the following in your engineering notebook “What do you need to do?” Identify the problem or need. What is the goal? What would be the perfect answer to the problem or need? May change as you work your way through the design process. Raise your hand if you have an example!
11
Examples of “Identify Problem”
Mr. Kiley’s first cell phone? The first car? The mouse from handout page 98. Diseases like cancer, childhood illnesses and other sickness? The invention of the mouse page 99. Problems: Reliable-will always work. Easy to use Not too expensive Easy to make
12
Brainstorm The Design Process Come up with ideas to solve problems
All Ideas welcome No criticism Creative Group should have many ideas. More = better! How does it solve the problem?
13
Research the Problem Gather information that will help your task.
What has already been done on the problem or need? What worked and what did not work with their ideas? Talk to experts and listen Internet Books and magazines People in the field
14
Designs The Design Process
Get realistic What can you really do and pick the best ideas. Write and sketch what your final design should do and look like. What is really possible with your time, tools and materials.
15
Ok, let’s practice! Your design ideas from the last class. Apply the first steps again to your design. Mr. Kiley and prefects will be there to check evidence of work and give feedback. If you don’t have your paperwork, start again with a new idea.
16
Build-Test Team may have more problems to overcome The Design Process
Does your design equal success? What challenges in your model will be the same or harder in the final project? Build a prototype! What is a prototype?
17
Examples of prototypes(models)
18
Prototype Sketch and label
Build a small example of what the design will look like and do. Remember: Product or process Does it work? Will it work if much larger to solve design task?
19
Share solutions Feedback Listen to possible design changes.
The Design Process Share solutions Feedback Communicate how design meets the needs. Listen to possible design changes.
20
Redesign The Design Process
Identify problems and redesign to solve the problem(s).
21
The design process continues
22
Practice List some problems or needs that you think should be solved.
Pick one Write the steps to the engineering design process for your task Label each step: Get ready for Mr. Kiley and prefects to check your work. Feedback step coming soon-be ready
23
Design a brochure to present your idea
Is your problem clearly stated? Does it communicate your problem and solution? Can someone giving feedback see your steps of the design process?
24
Brochures World Wildlife Fund
25
Other problems to solve
Present your brochure No criticism. Positive feedback. Redesign ideas Other problems to solve
