Improvisation Chapter 1 11/22/2018
2
Improvisation Improvisation is the portrayal of the character or scene without rehearsal or preparation. 11/22/2018
3
Spontaneity Credibility, and freshness in each performance are the goals of the director of a play: the challenge to the cast, and the pleasure of the audience. 11/22/2018
4
Illusion of the First Time
After weeks of rehearsal or after many performances, making the audience feel that each performance is “illusion of the first time,” is sometimes difficult. 11/22/2018
5
Two approaches To Tell a Story
Character Centered Approach Situation Centered Approach Focuses on a character or group of characters who experience different situations, one after the other. Man of La Mancha is an example of this approach. Little Shop of Horrors, a situation centered play, demonstrates how different personalities respond to a single situation. 11/22/2018

Improvisation One The Mirror The Machine
Face a partner. One person is the activator; the other person is the responder. The activator moves the hands, the head, in any part of the body while pretending to look in the mirror. The responder must match the actions of the activator. This is group improvisation that put your imagination to the test. One person starts to machine by performing a physical action, such as pumping an arm or lifting and knee. Another person joins the first piece of machinery linking a different physical action to the first. Other actors join until its many members of the group is possible become part of the machine. 11/22/2018

Improvisation Exercises
The Machine, variation one The machine, variation two Make the machine perform a manufacturing process in which raw materials are turned into a finished product. Add sailings to the actions. Each new action must be accompanied by its own new sound. 11/22/2018

Successful improvisation
Reminders Reminders Speak loudly throughout the theater. Do not hide behind furniture. Move about freely Take plenty of time to speak. Stay in character all the time 11/22/2018
9
Motivated Sequence Skilled actors respond to internal or external stimuli Thoughts Actions. What they hear. See. Taste. Feel Smell. 11/22/2018
10
Motivated Sequence You experience the stimulus.
You respond instinctively to the stimulus (primary response) The idea “Connects”. Your brain registers the stimulus. This takes a fraction of the second. This is referred to as idea connection. 11/22/2018
11
Motivated Sequence If this stimulus causes a reflex action, you might jerk back your head, or you might make a sale. Your eyes look in that direction Then your body reacts; your chest moves in the direction of the stimulus ( secondary response). 11/22/2018
12
Motivated Sequence You react vocally and/or physically with your main response. 11/22/2018
13
Motivated Sequence Exercises
You are preparing to enjoy a meal in a fine restaurant. As you pick up your fork, you see a fly in your food. The Principal enters your classroom and in his serious voice asks you to accompany her to her office. 11/22/2018
14
Motivated Sequence Exercises
You pick up the morning newspaper and read that a close friend has been selected for a prestigious award. Your history teacher announces a pop quiz on a chapter you have not read. 11/22/2018
15
Establishing a Character
Very demanding to build a character Workout a situation, formulate your actions Create effective dialogue all at the same time In order to avoid stress--- ask yourself questions ahead of time about what the character might be like… Do some research Raised eyebrow, silence stare, one-word response, or a groan might convey information better than words. 11/22/2018
16
Questions To Ask About Your Character
Who am I? What kind of person am I? Hello am I different from the other characters? What are the fewest things I can do to convey the most information about my character? What does my character want? 11/22/2018
17
Characterizations Reenact some event, real or imaginary, such as the following: Lunch. Someone rushes in with the news that a spaceship has just landed in a nearby park. Speculate on the ship, its occupants, it is origin and so forth. You are a member of the Roman Senate; Julius Caesar has just been stabbed to death. Recall something Caesar did to you that makes you support or reject the conspirators. After having just been given an engagement ring, announce it to the world—including your former admirers and your fiancé’s former admirers. 11/22/2018
18
Do’s and Don’ts Do you establish your character quickly
Do ask what your character wants or needs Do keep focused on meeting your goal Do see things through the eyes of your character Do not deny anything. Your partner say about you or the situation Do not ask questions in an improvisation? Do not use simple statements. Do not explain situations and feelings. If you are happy, show it. 11/22/2018
19
Group Improvisation Use any book, newspaper clipping, cartoon, anecdotes from magazine, events in the lives of people you know, or his story goal and literary sources—choose any type of scene; decide on the mood—comic or sad, fanciful or realistic. Decide on the mood in the general idea that you want to convey. Choose the character you will play. Each character should have a distinct personality. The greater the difference in age, personality, and type between the characters, the more contrast your scene will contain. 11/22/2018

Single Emotional Response
React to the following: Your face is red You have pretty eyes. I love you. Do you always look like that? I think you are frightened You are standing on my toe More activities Page 20-21 11/22/2018

Create a Script Create a short script about a situation of your choice. Your script should be easily adaptable for theater, film, or television. A genie grants ten wishes to a person who would prefer to have only two. Think of the commercials you like. Geico Progressive Insurance Commercial of the year Girl wakes up doesn’t remember the night before. She finds pictures all over, finds a wedding dress, eventually George Clooney comes in…She’s married to him… 11/22/2018
