Directions: For each slide, write at least one question or interesting fact about the information and/or picture on that slide. For slides #1 and #2 – write a question about the topic and write something that you already know about the topic (even if you are not sure that it is true).

2 How do leaves help a plant? Ch. 4 L. 1 Pg. 94 - 97

3 Vocabulary Photosynthesis – the process plants and some other organisms use to make sugar for food.

4 Cells and Tissues in leaves
Plants make their own food in leaves. Leaves are organs made of layers of tissues. Tissues are made of cells. Outside flat cells make up epidermis (the skin of the leaf) Inner tissue is sponge-like for air to pass Bottom has tiny openings to let air in and out Vessels are tubes.

6 Photosynthesis!!! The process that plants and some other organisms use to make sugar for food. Carbon dioxide + water + sunlight energy  oxygen + sugar Process happens during cellular respiration. Process happens in Chloroplasts.

7 Photosynthesis!!! (cont.)
Carbon dioxide – inhaled (breathed in) by the plant through leaves Water – taken in through the roots of the plant Sunlight – provides energy for Carbon Dioxide and Water to combine. Oxygen – what animals inhale (breathe in) Sugar/Glucose (C6H1206) – food the plant needs to grow and survive.

8 Don’t forget that sugar is consumed by the plant for energy.

9 Answer the following Questions
In which part of the plant cell does photosynthesis happen? What 3 things do plants need to go through photosynthesis? What 2 things do plants produce from the photosynthesis?
