8 Other Notes… When two nouns are separated by “or”, the pronoun will be singular. Ex: Did James or Nick want his work ahead of time? When two nouns are separated by “and”, the pronoun will be plural. Ex: Did James and Nick want their work ahead of time? Really tricky: When one antecedent is plural and one is singular, and they are separated by “or”, match the pronoun with the antecedent closest to it within the sentence. Ex: Did James or the girls want their work ahead of time?
