About the Author Sir William Gerald Golding British Novelist and Nobel Laureate Born in St. Columb Minor, Cornwall Went to school at Oxford University Worked as an actor, writer, producer and settlement house worker before becoming a secondary teacher

Part of the sinking of the German battleship Bismarck Involved in the landing in Normandy Resumed teaching after the war until he retired in 1961 In 1988 he was knighted Awarded the Nobel Prize in literature in 1983
