1 Unit 1: The scientific Method
Part 1

2 What is the scientific method?
It is…. the process scientists use to organize the steps of trying to solve a problem about the world around them. ----- Meeting Notes (9/6/16 13:04) ----- Stopped here with Class D

3 Steps of the Scientific Method
Define the problem/Ask a question Background research Write a hypothesis Design the experiment Perform the experiment Analyze the data Draw conclusions -ask a measurable question - find out as much as you can -make a prediction about what you think will happen -design a way to answer your question -perform the experiment, make observations & record what happened -look for trends in the data -summarize what happened, and why you think it happened using your background knowledge to support ----- Meeting Notes (9/6/16 10:15) ----- Stopped here class B

4 Scientific Method Observations
Data collected using one or more of your senses to gather information (see, hear, taste, touch, smell) Scientists also use instruments to carefully gather accurate and detailed observations. What are observations? Why are they important?

5 Scientific Method Qualitative Observations- Quantitative Observations-
Description, words, not measureable red flowers smells like fresh baked cookies tastes bitter Quantitative Observations- Numbers or amounts, measureable or countable 3 meters long 4 marbles 50 kilograms 35O Celsius Give me other examples

6 Scientific Method Inference Prediction
A conclusion based on evidence and reasoning Prediction A forecast of what will happen in the future based on past experience or evidence How are they different? A prediction is referring to a future action, an inference can be a conclusion about something that may have happened, or may be true.

7 Scientific Method Make 3 observations, 2 inferences & 1 prediction

8 Scientific Method Make 3 observations, 2 inferences & 1 prediction

9 Tools Used By Scientists
Triple Beam Balance/Scale Graduated Cylinder Ruler/Meter Stick Measures mass Unit: kg Measures volume Unit: L (for liquids) cm3 (for solids) Measures length Unit: m

10 More Tools….. Test Tube Erlenmeyer Flask Beaker Pipette Thermometer
Microscope What do we use these tools for? Pipette Test Tube

11 Tools Continued…. Hot Plate Goggles Forceps Lab Apron Scalpel
What do we use these tools for? Scalpel
