the house Vocabulary and spelling practice ESOL Entry 1/2 – Problems in the Home Main curriculum links Ww/E1.1 Use and spell correctly some personal key words. Ww/E1.1a Develop knowledge of a context based vocabulary and structural words. Ww/E1.1c Develop strategies to aid spelling. Rw/E1.1a Recognise a limited number of words, signs and symbols. Rt/E2.1b Obtain information from texts (using skimming, scanning and detailed reading as necessary). Background Used alongside the Skills for Life ESOL Entry 1 materials (unit 7, Homes pages 9-10 and the two accompanying audio tracks) available at First used to revise key vocabulary / dialogue used when dealing with household problems and when phoning for help. The type-in boxes provide extra spelling practice. The final screen provides reading practice. Ideas for displaying PowerPoint Presentation must be displayed full screen or type-in boxes will not be active. Screen 1 Introduction. Ask students what they can see in the pictures! Talk about Yellow Pages: how they are available in the traditional yellow book and also online. (Is this what the woman with the blocked vacuum cleaner is looking for on her computer?!) Screens 2-6. Ask students what the picture is. Practise saying the word in a phrase or sentence. Then, working individually or in pairs (with small individual whiteboards and dry wipe pens), can they spell the word? Hold up whiteboard for tutor to check spellings. Alternatively, pass a cordless keyboard around and ask a volunteer to type spelling in the box. Then click to reveal correct spelling. For further practice hand out dialogue cards and ‘problem’’ cards (available on site as separate Word document). Screen 7 For skimming and scanning practice (Entry 2). Fire questions at students such as: You live in Oxford and your drains are blocked. Who can you call? You have mice in your kitchen. Who do you call? You need a plumber that takes credit cards? Where does Mr Hayes live? What’s his phone number? Who can replace a tile on your roof? Who has 24hr call out? etc.
