What is Motion?
2
Motion All matter in the universe is in constant motion
An object is in motion if it changes positions Relative motion uses a starting point to determine if an object has moved (Reference Point)
3
Distance Distance is how far you have traveled
Displacement is the distance between starting and ending points and the direction traveled (meters) Displacement
4
Speed Speed- Distance an object travels in a unit of time
Speed (meter/second)=Distance/Time S=D/T Average Speed- Divide the total distance traveled by the total time taken. Instantaneous Speed- Speed of an object at one instant of time
5
Graphing Motion Can represent motion of an object with a distance-time graph Can be used to compare the speeds of objects Object 1 Object 2
6
Velocity Velocity- Speed of the object and the direction of its motion
Sometimes represented by an arrow Velocity can change if speed changes, direction of motion changes, or both 3 Different Velocities
7
Acceleration The rate in which velocity changes.
You must calculate the change in speed per unit of time. Acceleration = Final speed – Initial speed/ Time
