Newton's 1st Law of Motion
Introductory Physics Physical Science 2017
2
Forces: Force: A push or a pull
3
Balanced vs. unbalanced forces
When all forces applied to an object are in balance, there is no net movement in the object. Net force = 0 No movement in object If the forces are unbalanced, the object will move.
4
Newton's 1st law of Motion
Things like to keep doing whatever they're already doing. Or.... “An object in motion tends to stay in motion and an object at rest tends to stay at rest unless acted upon by an outside force.”
5
Inertia INERTIA is a property of an object that describes how hard it is to change the motion of the object Can be described as “amount of laziness.” more mass means more inertia
6
Inertia! Things like to keep on doing whatever they’re doing!
7
Inertia can suck!
8
Large Mass vs. Small Mass
An object with a large mass has a large amount of inertia. Once it starts to move, it's hard to stop. An object with a small mass has very little inertia. It’s easy to start moving or to stop moving.
9
Weight v. Mass MASS is the measure of the amount of matter in an object, measured in grams (g) or kilograms (kg) Weight is a measure of the force of gravity on an object. Measured in Newtons (N).
10
WEIGHT = MASS GRAVITY x WEIGHT GRAVITY / MASS =

There's no air...
