Unit 6 Vocabulary Definitions
2
What you already know Speed- how far you travel in a certain amount of time (distance/time) Work- moving something over a distance Motion- changing position
3
What you probably know, even if you're not aware of it
Velocity- the speed of something in a given direction Acceleration- change in velocity (speed up, slow down, change direction)
4
Some brand new terminology
Force- push or pull on an object Net Force- the total of the forces on an object Balanced Force- object is still (net force=0) Unbalanced Forces- object is moving (net force =/= 0) Vectors- a value with magnitude and direction Magnitude- how much
5
Newton's Laws 1- An object at rest, stays at rest. An object in motion, stays in motion. Unless acted upon by an outside force. Inertia- a tendency to stay still 2- Force = mass x acceleration 3- For every force there is a paired force equal in magnitude and opposite in direction
6
Some common forces Friction- force of things rubbing against one another Air Resistance- the force of air against the object Gravity- a field force dependent on mass
7
Learning Objectives MS-PS2-2. Plan an investigation to provide evidence that the change in an object’s motion depends on the sum of the forces on the object and the mass of the object. MS-PS2-1. Apply Newton’s Third Law to design a solution to a problem involving the motion of two colliding objects.
