2. What needs to happen for this box to be in motion?

3. Force force - a push or pull
an object will speed up, slow down, or turn only if something pushes or pulls on it
Ex: a golf club pushes on a ball
gravity pulls on the falling golf ball
Earth pushes against the ball when it lands

4. Forces net force - the combination of all forces acting on an object
the net force always determines the motion of the object
more than one force can act on an object at the same time

5. Net Force
two forces in the same direction are ADDED to get the net force
two forces in opposite directions are SUBTRACTED to get the net force

6. Balanced vs. Unbalanced
balanced forces cancel each other out and thus do not change the object’s motion
(net force = zero)
unbalanced forces - change the object’s motion
(net force ≠ zero)
