Forces & Motion Vocabulary
2
force A Push or pull exerted on an object to change the motion of the object. Can result in acceleration, speed, or direction.
3
Sum of ALL the forces acting on an object
Net force Sum of ALL the forces acting on an object
4
Balanced force 2 forces going in opposite directions equal in size - NO CHANGE/MOTION - have a net force of 0 N.
5
Force that cause a change in motion
Unbalanced force Force that cause a change in motion
6
Force that is used on an object
Applied force Force that is used on an object
7
Newton’s Laws of Motion
Describe the motion of objects and how they interact. (1) Every object moves in a straight line unless acted upon by a force. (2) The acceleration of an object is directly proportional to the net force exerted and inversely proportional to the object's mass. (3) For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.
8
Action or process of being moved
motion Action or process of being moved
9
Reference Point A point/object used to determine if motion has occurred.
10
Friction A force that opposes motion; defined as the action of one surface or object rubbing against another.
11
How quickly something increases in speed
acceleration How quickly something increases in speed
