1
The Urinary System Chapter 15
2
Big picture functions of urinary system
produces & expels urine (which ultimately. . . ) produces hormones excretion of metabolic wastes
3
Gross anatomy of urinary system
kidneys ureters urinary bladder urethra
5
Internal anatomy of kidneys
renal cortex: renal medulla: nephrons: renal pelvis: rich blood supply
9
The nephron
11
The kidneys are the chief osmoregulators in humans
Kidneys maintain water balance & solute concentration in body fluids by filtration of blood: water, ions & other dissolved substances are removed from blood leaving just cells & large proteins in glomerulus & glomerular capsule reabsorption of water, nutrients (glucose & AA) & ions back into blood, concentrating filtrate secretion of substances not needed by body; final adjustments to concentration & composition of urine excretion of urine
12
Hormonal regulation of kidney function
angiotensin II aldosterone atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) antidiuretic hormone (ADH)
13
What kidneys do to maintain pH
Remember this reaction?: CO2 + H2O H2CO3 H+ + HCO3-
14
