NO VFW, use only your calculator
Coulombs Law Practice Two electrons are a distance 2.3x10-4 meters apart. What is the force that exists between them? NO VFW, use only your calculator
2
Electric Fields Lines - +
A concept first developed by Michael Faraday, electric field lines are a useful tool to help us understand the force that would exist on a charge at any point surrounding an electric field.
3
“rules” for drawing electric field lines
The lines point in the direction a positive test charge would go. Lines go to the edge of the canvas. Lines never cross. The higher the charge, the more lines The closer the arrows the higher the force.
4
Test Charge A “test” charge is a tiny imaginary POSITVE charge (so tiny that it has no effect on the surrounding charges). It is placed in an electric field to get an idea of the fields strength and direction.
5
Two fixed charges (Negative and Positive).
One by one, we place in some test charges and imagine the force that would be acting on them. - +
6
Single Positive Charge
7
Single Negative Charge

Electric Field Lines – Dipole
9
Electric Field Lines – Like Charges
13
Fast Moving Electron Draw the path that the electron would take.
14
Electron in a Uniform Field
The electron is projected horizontally into a uniform electric field The electron undergoes a downward acceleration
15
The Cathode Ray Tube (CRT)
The electrons are deflected in various directions by two sets of plates The placing of charge on the plates creates the electric field between the plates and allows the beam to be steered
