2 Types of Friendships Acquaintances
These are people you say “hello” to in the hall, but you don’t make a point to see them socially. Examples: Classmates you recognize Friends of friends Neighbors who live in your area People who ride the same bus as you

3 Types of Friendships Casual Friends
These are friends who come into your life because of a special interest of a common purpose. Examples: It’s someone you’re assigned to work with on a science project Someone who’s on the debate team with you Attends your church

4 Types of Friendships Close Friends
These are friends you hang around with, go to the movies with, whose homes you visit and who you invite into your home. You may have no special interest other than talking and sharing your feelings, thoughts, and ambitions. You can argue and express different opinions without being afraid of spoiling the friendship.

5 Types of Friendships Intimate Friends
These friends have the freedom to tell you the truth, no matter how it may affect you. They know all about you and you know all about them. Nothing is kept from the other. Intimate friends don’t just appear in our lives, but develop through the stages of friendship from acquaintance up to the higher level of intimacy.

6 Positive Characteristics of Friendships
Listening Understand feelings and moods Solve problems together Sincere compliments Dependable Respectful Trustworthy

7 Negative Characteristics of Friendships
Unsupportive Oppressive Unreliable Overly demanding Take and give nothing back Gossip about everyone, including you! Criticize in an “joking” manner

8 Developing and Maintaining Friendships
The Newly Friend Game Partner with a student in the class that you do not know very well. Each student must have a pen or pencil. Follow the teacher’s instructions throughout this activity.

9 Summary It is important to have many different types of friendships.
Be aware of the positive and negative characteristics you find in your friendships. Don’t be afraid to make new friends and find out more about your current friends! 
