Goal – something you aim for that takes planning and work Short-term Goal – a goal that you can reach in a short period of time Long-term Goal – a goal that you plan to reach over an extended period of time Action Plan – a multistep strategy to identify and achieve your goals Self-imposed Goal - provide higher motivation and therefore increase probability of success (Most people resent having things forced on them)

Do you want to be successful?
There are two essential elements in being successful: 1. Having a Goal 2. Reaching a Goal Many people who have gained success have never actually took to the time to set goals Those that are truly successful are those who have gotten into the habit of setting “Self-imposed goals”

What is a Goal? Goals help shape our life in positive ways
They allow you to focus your energy on behaviors that you want to develop or change They are effective ways to build self-confidence, increase your self-esteem and improve your overall health.

What types of Goals are there?
There are 2 types of goals Short-Term – require a short period of time to accomplish Ex. Finishing a project during the weekend, Cleaning your room Long-Term – require an extended period of time to accomplish Ex. Improving your grades for the semester, Making a sports team next season Short-term goals are generally steps in a plan to achieve a Long-Term goal

Guidelines for Setting Goals
Before you begin setting goal consider some of these guidelines: Make sure that your goals are your own, not someone else’s Set a goal because it will help you grow, not because you want to outdo someone If you do not achieve our goal, use what you’ve learned to set a new goal

Guidelines to Setting Goals
Once you have considered the guideline you need to create an “action plan” Follow the following steps Set a specific, realistic goal, and write it down State it positively to help motivate you List the steps you will take to reach your goal Look for ways to break your goal into smaller short-term goals Identify sources of help and support Friends, Family members, teachers, etc… Set a reasonable time frame for reaching your goal Make sure you put it in writing Evaluate your progress by establishing checkpoints Reward yourself for achieving your goal
