1 A Streetcar named Desire
Scene 7 Ian Yule

2 Dramatic contrasts The portieres are open and a table is set for a birthday supper with cake and flowers, Stella is completing the decorations as Stanley comes in Blanche is singing in the bathroom a saccharine popular ballad which is used contrapunctually with Stanley’s speech

3 Dramatic Contrasts Stanley: Hey, canary bird! Toots! Get OUT of the BATHROOM! Must I speak more plainly? The bathroom door flies open and Blanche emerges with a gay peal of laughter, but as Stanley crosses past her, a frightened look appears on her face, almost a look of panic. Her longing to wash off the guilt of her past is now about to meet the revelation of the truth and this is emphasised through dramatic contrast.
