1 AMSA LIGHT TRUCK TIRES MARCH 2018

2 LETS TALK ABOUT LIGHT TRUCK TIRES !!

3 Ponder this…. What equipment type has the most amount of wheel positions within your fleets out there? In most, if not all, cases, it would be your Light Truck fleet…

4 When did purchasing light truck tires get so complicated?
All Season / M&S All Terrain All Weather Winter Severe Service / Commercial So many choices… so little time! Let’s try and wade through this….

5 M&S RATING vs 3 PEAK MOUNTAIN SNOWFLAKE
M&S Rated Multiple pockets or slots in at least one tread edge. Edges of pockets or slots at angles between 35 and 90 degrees from direction of travel. No tire testing required. No regulation. Use of M&S rating started in the 1950’s and simply indicated a lug tread design. 3 Peak Mountain Snowflake Tightly regulated, must pass traction tests that indicate quantifiable, significant improvements in braking, acceleration and cornering over a baseline all season tire. Rubber compounding retains elasticity at temperatures below 7 degrees Celcius.

6 All Season Generally, a rib based design with symmetrical tread blocks. Quiet, comfortable ride with reliable braking in wet and dry conditions in warm weather. Harder rubber compound which starts to lose grip at 7 degrees C Channels in the tread tend to clog with ice, snow and slush creating a slippery surface in winter M&S rated

7 All Terrain Tires More aggressive tread design
Works on road with some off road capability as well Better “bite” than an all season Reasonably quiet on road with good steering response

8 All Weather Evolved from the All Terrain.
Aggressive tread design with softer compound and more siping. Tread stays soft above or below 7 degrees C 3 Peak Mountain Snowflake rated

9 Winter Soft compound, heavily siped.
Superior braking and cornering with winter conditions. Performs well in snow, ice, slush and cold dry asphalt Doesn’t get along well with gravel 3 Peak Mountain Snowflake rated

10 Severe Service / Commercial
Aggressive tread block design Harder compound with wider voids Heavy duty construction On/Off road capabilities Durable

11 What is more important in your fleet?
ALL TERRAIN ALL-WEATHER ALL-SEASON SEVERE SERVICE/ COMMERCIAL WINTER DURABILITY WINTER TRACTION

12 Next Steps… Identify tire brands in the categories you want to test.
Testing… 1, 2, 3 Which tire brand works best in my fleet? What tire(s) will satisfy my team? What kind of an impact will this have on my tire budget?

13

14 How does this benefit my fleet?
Determines the right tire for your application. Standardizes your tire choices in your light truck fleet. Cost savings Safety for your team Peace of mind
