5. Mixtures – 2 or more substances mixed together, but not chemically bound; physically separated
Heterogeneous mixtures
Homogeneous mixtures
Substances are not evenly mixed
2 samples of the same mixture will not be identical
Ex: trail mix, smoke, granite
Substances are evenly mixed
2 samples of the same mixture will be identical
Ex: soda, brass, air

6. Heterogeneous Mixtures
You can see the different parts making up the mixture
The parts of the mixtures are NOT evenly distributed (2 scoops of Lucky Charms won’t have the same amount and type of marshmallows)

7. Homogeneous Mixtures
Can’t see the different parts making up the mixture because it is evenly mixed
Two scoops of the mixture will be identical (if I pour Sprite into two glasses, both glasses will contain the same amount of water, sugar, flavorings, and other ingredients)

8. Solutions
Some homogeneous mixtures can also be categorized as solutions
Solution – mixture of 2+ substances in a liquid form
Solvent – basic form of a solution; water is a universal solvent
Solute – what is added into the solution
The SOLVEnt disSOLVEs the solute
Ex: water (solvent) + salt (solute) = salt water (solution)

9. Mixtures
Mixtures are physically combined, so they can be physically separated; the atoms are NOT bonded together
Separate a bowl of mixed candy into different piles based on type of candy
Let salt water evaporate on a windowsill; the salt will be left behind as the water evaporates into vapor
