VC VR N Plantains - Plantaginaceae I Very Common Very Rare Native Introduced Ribwort plantain - Plantago lanceolata VC N Flowering head brown-black with protruding white stamens Flower stalk much longer than flowering head Leaves long and pointed with parallel veins. Leaves basal Greater plantain - Plantago major VC N Flowering head only slightly shorter than flower stalk. Leaves basal, oval and pointed with parallel veins Flowers yellowish-green with protruding stamens which change from purple to yellow as they mature VC N Sea plantain - Plantago maritima Clusters of brownish-yellow flowers with protruding pale yellow stamens Flower stalk much longer than flowering head. Leaves basal, long and fleshy with faint veins Buck’s-horn plantain - Plantago coronopus VC N Flowering head brown with protruding brown-yellow stamens. Leaves basal, deeply lobed and toothed Flower stalk much longer than flowering head. Hoary plantain- Plantago media This is a hairy plant with oval leaves with a short but broad leaf stalk. The flowering head is green-brown with lilac-white protruding anthers. The flower stalk is much longer than the flowering head. It is rare in Ireland and is mainly found in the east.
