Compare and Order Fractions By Mr. Bales

Objective By the end of the lesson, you will be able to compare and order simple fractions. Standard 4NS1.9 - Students will identify on a number line the relative positions of positive fractions…..

Introduce Which is larger, 1/5 or 1/4? Can you think of three fractions larger than 3/5? On your whiteboards, try to arrange the following fractions from least to greatest: 3/5, 1/5, 4/5, 5/5, 2/5 1/10, 7/10, 5/10, 9/10, 3/10 1414

Get Ready to Learn Alejandro has an insect collection. The table shows the lengths of four insects in his collection. Which is longer, a field cricket or a whirligig beetle? InsectLength Mosquito1/4 Field Cricket 5/8 Whirligig Beetle 3/8 Lightning Bug 1/2

Compare Fractions Which is longer, a field cricket or a whirligig beetle? You can use models to compare 5/8 and 3/8. The model shows that 5/8 > 3/8 So, the field cricket is longer.

Compare Fractions What is longer, a mosquito or a lightning bug? You need to compare 1/4 and 1/2. 1/2 > 1/4 So, the lightning bug is longer. 0 3/41/42/4 01 1/2

You Try On your whiteboards, order the following fractions from least to greatest: (Use fractions models and drawings to help) 1/2, 3/4, 5/6, 1/3, 3/4, 1/6 Without using fractions models, why is it hard to order fractions that do not have the same denominator? Try these from least to greatest: 1/7, 1/4, 1/5, 1/3, 1/6, 1/2, 1/8 Can you describe a rule when the numerators are all the same?

Did I hear you say you need help from Mr. Haresty?
