Blood and Blood Typing Circulatory System
2
You have about 5 litres of blood in your body.
3
Blood is a circulating connective tissue.
4
It is made of a fluid called plasma, two types of cells (red blood cells and white blood cells), and particles called platelets.
5
Blood The main function of blood is to supply oxygen and nutrients to tissues and to remove waste products like carbon dioxide. Blood also transports hormones, enzymes, and immune cells between tissues and organs.
6
Blood Any interruption in the flow of blood can cause death in a matter of minutes. Interruptions in blood flow may be caused by a heart attack, stroke, or other blood clots.
8
Plasma About 55% of your blood is plasma.
Plasma is the fluid part of the blood that contains water, dissolved nutrients, sugars, and proteins. Floating in the plasma are red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets
9
Red Blood Cells About 40-45% of your blood is made of red blood cells.
Red blood cells transport oxygen to your cells.
10
Red Blood Cells Red blood cells are red because of a pigment called hemoglobin. Hemoglobin grabs onto the oxygen molecules you breathe and carries them to your cells.
11
White blood cells are part of your immune system.
12
White Blood Cells They help fight infections by destroying invaders like bacteria and viruses. Some white blood cells engulf (eat) invaders. Others produce antibodies (fighters) that destroy invaders.
14
Platelets Platelets are particles that prevent blood loss. When you cut or scrape your skin, platelets clump together in the damaged area and form a “plug”.
16
Blood Components
17
Blood Types People have different blood types.
A blood type is based on the presence or absence of two proteins (A, B) on the surface of red blood cells. There are four possible blood types (ABO groups) …
18
Blood Types Type A Only the A protein is present. Type B Only the B protein is present. Type AB Both proteins are present. Type O Neither protein is present.
19
This tells you whether you are positive (+) or negative (-).
But really, there are eight possible blood types, because of something called the Rh Factor! This tells you whether you are positive (+) or negative (-). Rh Present = (+) Rh Not Present = (-)

Blood Transfusions Blood transfusion is the process of receiving blood or blood products into one’s circulatory system through IV. Incompatible (non-matching) blood types CANNOT MIX due to coagulation (clumping of blood)!!!
