1 Non-Normal Data Distributions

2 Normal Distribution Median: Middle Number
Mode: number that occurs most often (where the mound is highest) 𝑥

3 “Right Skewed” 𝑴𝑶𝑫𝑬<𝑴𝑬𝑫𝑰𝑨𝑵<𝑴𝑬𝑨𝑵
Skew is where the tail is: tail on right=right skew 𝑴𝑶𝑫𝑬<𝑴𝑬𝑫𝑰𝑨𝑵<𝑴𝑬𝑨𝑵

4 “Left Skewed”

5 Example The test results of Mr. Smith’s algebra test form a “Right Skewed” distribution. Did more students score higher than the mean or lower than the mean? More Students refers to the mode of the data In a “right skewed” distribution, 𝑚𝑜𝑑𝑒<𝑚𝑒𝑎𝑛 More students scored below the mean

6 Example Jen collected data for the school yearbook. She asked students to estimate how many text messages they send each day. She found the mean to be 265 and the median to be 340. What kind of distribution is this? Median≠mean so it cannot be normal mean<median so it has to be a “left skewed” distribution
