3 Use the internet to search any type of symbol!!!
Symbols are used to indicate features like doorways, windows, stairs, fireplaces, and appliances. different shapes used to show furniture in each room only the length and widths are indicated. 1 drawback, floor plans don’t show heights of furniture, walls, windows, and doorways. Use the internet to search any type of symbol!!! 11/23/2018

4 Making room drawings Scale drawing Inches=feet
Commonly used scale is ¼ inch=1foot (easiest to make scale drawings if you use graph paper with ¼ inch squares) EX. if you have a wall that is 10ft long then you would use 10 squares on a 1/4inch scale graph paper to draw this wall. Swing for door: indicated the direction in which a door opens, so you can allow enough space for the swing of the door. 11/23/2018

5 Principles of furniture arrangement
Keep room purpose in mind- who will be using the room and what are the needs of the room. Examine architectural & mechanical features of room- doors & window need room to open, electrical outlets need to be accessible with lamps close Provide space for traffic—known as traffic patterns Most direct route people use to get through a room or from one part of the home to another. Furniture should not block these pathways. People should be able to move from one place to another without bothering others. 11/23/2018

7 Principles of furniture arrangement Cont.
Consider size of room A small room does not need a lot of furniture or large pieces of furniture, or a large room with small pieces of furniture. Don’t overcrowd a room Allow room for pieces of furniture to open and someone stand in front of it 11/23/2018

8 Guidelines for specific rooms
The living room 1. Arrange seating for conversation Do not have lights so they shine in peoples faces. Place furniture near each other so people don’t have to yell at each other when talking. 11/23/2018

9 2. Place furniture in relation to other pieces.
Have tables near sofa so people can set things down like drinks or books Example: coffee table in front of sofa & tables on either side of sofa L or U shaped layout: great for conversation 11/23/2018

10 Guidelines for specific rooms Cont.
The dining room 1. Dinning room table Allow room so chairs can be pulled out & people can get by Don’t block a doorway 2. Hutch, buffet, or china cabinet Used for storage or serving 11/23/2018

11 Guidelines for specific rooms Cont.
Bedroom 1. Bed Head of bed against longest wall or parallel to the longest wall. 2. Bedside table Usually positioned on both sides of bed. If using 2 twin beds place a table between the two. 3. Closet: leave room to open door and stand in front of closet so don’t place furniture too close to closet opening 11/23/2018
