2 The Engineering Design Process
Composition Notebook Pg. 11

3 Look at the different pictures of models below…
Physical Conceptual Mathematical

4 Look around the room…then write down the technologies you see.
Examples: Computer TV Projector Phone Pencil Sharpener Stapler Chair Paper Pencil Desk

5 What is technology? Anything that was designed to help serve our needs! They are constantly changing.

6 Engineers use science to create new technologies.
Engineering—the process of creating technology

7 What is a prototype? Prototype: a test model of the product

8 The Engineering Design Process:
Ask (Identify the Problem) Imagine Create Plan Improve

9 Step One: ASK Research a need Gather samples Talk to possible users

10 Step Two: IMAGINE Brainstorm ideas for a solution Study the research

11 Step Three: PLAN Pick a solution Plan for a prototype Rule out options

12 Step Four: CREATE Build a prototype Test the prototype Evaluate

13 Step Five: IMPROVE Make modifications Look for better ways

14 Intended Benefits:

15 Unintended Consequences:

16 Let’s review… Intended Benefits—meant to promote well-being Unintended Consequences—accidental problems caused by a new invention

17 What about a computer??!!!! Benefits: Consequences: Type a paper
Connect w/friends Research a new job Shop Consequences: Cost a lot Facebook drama Stolen identity Uses electricity Virus

18 Which step of the design process?
After watching the sand clog the bottom of their water filter, Ren and Zen realized they should have put the sand on the top of the paper filter. IMPROVE

19 Which step of the design process?
Amy and Jane are designing an entertainment center they want to build in the classroom. Amy suggests they use drawers for DVD storage. Jane suggests they use shelves for DVD storage. PLAN

20 Which step of the design process?
Mrs. Baker and Mrs. Owens are putting together a new folder that can keep students organized. They have all of their materials and a detailed picture of what the folder should look like in front of them. CREATE

21 Which step of the design process?
Kendall and Jacob feel like the sleds they use in the winter never go fast enough down the sledding hill. They don’t have the money to buy new sleds, so they the decide to search the internet to see what other people have tried before. ASK

22 Which step of the design process?
Burt notices that his pencil erasers always break off the first time he uses them. He wonders why this problem keeps happening. ASK

23 Which step of the design process?
Kendall and Jacob have searched the internet looking for ideas to make their sleds go faster down the hill. They have combined various ideas and have written down a few suggestions. Now they need to choose the best one. IMAGINE

24 Bell Work Get out Comp book Sit quietly Wait for Instruction
YOU NEED RULER AND COLORED PENCILS!

26 Today’s Assignment… Brainstorm ideas for an invention that would make YOUR everyday life easier (ASK). Write the problem in complete sentences. Then brainstorm at least 10 ideas for a solution and Write them down (IMAGINE). Do the research or use prior knowledge and write down what you know about it. Next, come up with a plan. Pick a solution and plan your prototype with sketches and blueprints (PLAN). Rule out other unnecessary options. Pick one to sketch a prototype for and write an explanation of how it would work (CREATE). Be detailed. Evaluate and discuss how the prototype can be made better (IMPROVE)
