What is iSCSI? internet Small Computer System Interface? It is just…
A TCP/IP based protocol for establishing and managing connections between IP-based storage devices, hosts and clients using SCSI commands that are intercepted and directed to the iSCSI layer then sent as TCP packets. A great use of standard Ethernet wiring. A way to make remote disk space appear as locally-attached SCSI drives.

Dedicated Gigabit Ethernet Network
iSCSI SAN iSCSI Software Initiator runs on the clients Here is a quick overview of what an iSCSI SAN might look like. Deploying an iSCSI network is similar to deploying an IP network. The storage device is referred to as the iSCSI Target. Any Windows Storage Server 2003 R2 device can be configured as a target using Microsoft iSCSI Target. The iSCSI Initiator, is the application server that will utilize the SAN. These can be any combination of Exchange, SQL, File servers and so forth. Once the iSCSI target has been configured, the initiator views the iSCSI target disks the same as a local disk and any application can access it as a local disk. Client’s experience is unaffected by implementing a SAN. All of the devices in the iSCSI infrastructure can be connected with familiar Ethernet infrastructure. The same switches and cabling that you are currently using in your server room can probably be applied to an iSCSI implementation. It is even possible to share the infrastructure of your LAN and your iSCSI network. If necessary, the iSCSI traffic can travel through the same physical network as your client network. IT Best Practice Trend: Consolidation
11/23/2018 3:02 AM IT Best Practice Trend: Consolidation File Servers Application Servers Backup Servers spare spare spare Logs Logs Shares spare spare Stores Stores AD Domain Consolidation = Improved operations More efficient resource utilization Device sharing Physical space reduction Reduction in hardware costs Less points of management Better service levels A popular best practices for improved IT operations is consolidation of servers and consolidation of storage Consolidation provides many benefits including improved utilization of hardware resources Possible reduction of licensing costs Less equipment to maintain and manage Less points of management A reduction of physical space needs – which may be a precious resource in many environments. Consolidating storage provides the same benefits as consolidating servers and the ability to improve storage operations. The improved storage operations is the result of adding capabilities and flexibility that was not available with Direct attach storage configurations. All server consolidation efforts should consolidate storage as part of the project. The results typically pay for them selves immediately, and continue to provide positive returns in reduced management. Storage consolidation can also be done as part of the normal cycle of server retirement and upgrades. Again the results are dramatic in reducing both initial capital outlays as well as ongoing operating costs. © Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. iSCSI is a Familiar Network for IT Pros
Familiar IP Networking Expertise and Tools IP Interoperability Storage over Distance – Replication Multiple Layers of Security – Built-in to Protocol Good Performance at 1Gig iSCSI = internet Small Computer System Interface An interconnect protocol that: TCP/IP based protocol designed for storage area networks (SANs) Supports the block-based storage needs of database applications Establishes and manages connections between IP-based storage devices, hosts and clients Is based on familiar and ubiquitous open standards Provides advanced IP routing, management, and security tools iSCSI can be implemented anyplace you can implement IP Leverages experience of IT personnel + existing infrastructure = lower implementation and maintenance costs than FC Client/server-oriented connection protocol Based on proven technologies (SCSI/Ethernet/IP) Uses more cost effective commodity networking infrastructure Interoperability is high © Microsoft Corporation. Scenario – SQL, Exchange + Files
ALL-IN-ONE! Ease Backup Problems Easy Expansion High Availability Reduce TCO! Talking Points Exchange, SQL, and other database applications access data on the block level, a lower level protocol than file services. iSCSI performs very well at the block level. Use a Windows Storage Server 2003 R2 server to remove the direct attached storage from your database servers and consolidate into an iSCSI solution. Once again, expansion and backup challenges are solved. Your more efficient database storage solution can reduce the TCO of your servers.
