2 Welcome Parents! Welcome Thank you for coming to our meeting today
Thank you for entrusting the education of your child to us I want to give you an update on what has been happening in the school this year and where we are going Goals for the meeting To help parents understand what changes have been made and why To explain our expectations of your child. To share information about how parents can support their child’s learning.

Raising the Bar - Meeting the Challenge of Higher standards KHDA and NEASC have raised the expectations Introduced the US Curriculum Common Core standards Raise expectations of teachers and students Rigor of curriculum – Greater understanding of concepts learned not memorized Greater focus on fewer topics Speaking English in and out of the classroom

New Buildings completed Grade 1 and 11-12 US credit system in grade 9-10 for US Diploma House system True Electives in Grade 9-12. Prefects Attendance 100% for an entire month in several classes – Pizza with Mr. Mike CLP- Commitment to Learning Plan Thursday attendance grade 12. MAP Progress against the UAE and International levels Student Support Program Increase in attendance After School Academic Support Program Reduced Tardies Activity Program 1-4 Very little cheating on exams After school activities program MAP+CAT profile Students + Parents. Perfect Led Assemblies Middle School Exploratory Program. Homerooms – Moral Education Mon. and Wed. DMES Reads Tuesdays and Thursdays. Emphasis in Reading + Writing in more classes

8 Improvements in the school 2017-18 Teaching and Learning
In order to meet KHDA and NEASC Requirements our owners have committed to: Curriculum to meet the quality and rigor of a true US curriculum school. Class of 2020 and beyond our students may earn a KHDA certificate as well as a true US curriculum accredited Diploma through NEASC 45 Native English speaking Teachers hired, housed and flown over Improved English and methods of teaching Helped all staff to focus more on Student learning vs Memorization Qualified HOD’s to lead the implementation of the curriculum IELTS Qualified Teachers (6.5 minimum)

Children in school on a regular basis Happy children Children discovering learning Children Reading for fun Children with more self discipline and improved behavior Parents and the school working together to help our children Significant rise in childrens' commitment to learning and how we carefully track those who need improvement. Exceptional student progress on MAP in nearly every class Children with a higher set of morals and values A cleaner school A school that feels like home

We are closing the Gap Students exceeding the expected growth between Fall of and Fall of 2017 81% of our students in Math 78% of our students in Reading 73% of our students in Language By KHDA expectations this is very good to outstanding growth

We are closing the Gap Comparison between DMES student Growth and International student Fall 2016 to Fall 2017 (for example) Language Grade 8 to Grade 9 International students grew by 5 points = 1 grade level of growth DMES students grew by 13 points = Nearly 2 years of Growth We closed the Gap by 8 Points This occurred for each class in grades 5 to 12 Language – Reading - Math

We are closing the Gap There is still much work to be done We are compared against schools who have had their curriculum, teachers and pedagogy in place for many years To make this kind of progress in one year is incredible We are only beginning Updating our curriculum to better meet the needs of our students will help us to continue to close the gap Raised Expectations of our students to learn We need your help to continue

18 What is the US Curriculum?
Our Curriculum is based out of California starting Common Core State Standards clear, consistent guidelines for what every student should know and be able to do from KG - 12th grade. develop critical-thinking, problem-solving, and the analytical skills students will need to be successful measure student progress during the school year and ensure that students are on the pathway to success

19 Curriculum Goals Grades 9-12
US Curriculum is about a wide variety of courses Provides for students to take electives (English grades 11-12, Robotics, programing Art, etc) Place students in courses based on their proven ability Prepare our students for the next level (to reduce number of students taking foundation level courses to “0” by 2020) Help them to understand learning vs memorizing. Use MAP Growth to help parents and teachers track what the student knows and is able to understand. How can parents help Make sure they read every day Check Icampus often to see how well they are doing in class Check MAP skills to see what they should work on.

20 Curriculum Goals Grades 9-12
English 9 and English 10 English 11-12 Students can take a variety of choices based on their interest. Poetry – Creative Writing – Literature – Speech – 21st Century English Math Courses Will be following a progression of courses from grade 6-12 Algebra is a major component of success with California Curriculum Science Students will be required to pass one credit of Biology and one credit of a physical Science (Chemistry – Physics or similar)

24 Curriculum Goals Grades 5-8
Provided an opportunity for students to take electives Placed students in courses based on their proven ability Describe what the students will study during the school year, including the overall curriculum plans and goals. Include a detailed, colorful syllabus for parents to take home. Suggest ways that parents can help their child learn, such as reading together for 20 minutes a day. Use more than one slide to cover this information.

25 Curriculum Goals Grades 5-8 Accelerated Math
Focus points: The Traditional Pathway allows students to simply takes three math courses in 3 years. The Accelerated Pathway, 4 courses are compacted into three years in middle school. Students will take CC Math 6th and take the 6th grade MAP Growth exam at the end of the year to determine placement for 7th grade. Dependant of the students’ RIT scores on the 6th grade MAP Growth, they will be placed into Accelerated CC Math 7 for 7th grade, where they will take the entire CC Math 7 course, plus the first half of the CC Math 8. After completing Accelerated CC Math 7, the student will take Accelerated Algebra 1, where they will take the second half of CC Math 8, and all of the HS CC Algebra 1. Ultimately, this student will take 4 math courses in his three middle school years
