What is a Nation? A self-identifying group or community based on such factors as a common culture, history, language, ethnicity and religion.

What is Nationalism? A political ideology which believes that all nations deserve their own autonomy and self-determination i.e., a state to ensure this. Q. Is nationalism an instrument against oppression, independence and modernization or a cause of wars and domestic repression?

Ethnic vs. Civic Nationalism
Ethnic nationalism stresses the ethnic basis of community and solidarity. Japan? Israel? France? Civic nationalism stresses membership based on commitment to civic institutions.
