1 What is a Nation? A self-identifying group or community based on such factors as a common culture, history, language, ethnicity and religion.

2 What is Nationalism? A political ideology which believes that all nations deserve their own autonomy and self-determination i.e., a state to ensure this. Q. Is nationalism an instrument against oppression, independence and modernization or a cause of wars and domestic repression?

5 Ethnic vs. Civic Nationalism
Ethnic nationalism stresses the ethnic basis of community and solidarity. Japan? Israel? France? Civic nationalism stresses membership based on commitment to civic institutions.
