4 Why Do You Need Training?
Chemicals can be hazardous Especially if handled incorrectly You need to be aware of any risks Read the label! You need to be aware of relevant legislation It protects you, your colleagues and the public; most Health and Safety is common sense - read the label ! It’s not complicated or difficult...

5 Jargon: COSHH / MSDS COSHH MSDS: Material Safety Data Sheet
Control Of Substances Hazardous to Health MSDS: Material Safety Data Sheet Once you have been trained it becomes your responsibility to comply “Nobody told me that!” “That’s not my job!” “I’ve been doing this job for years and never needed protection!” “I get a rash using your chemicals!”

6 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
PPE must be available in the workplace It is your responsibility to use it Use goggles if spraying overhead or if the label tells you to Use gloves if the label tells you to Most products contain detergent and so can be irritant – just like soap or shampoo

7 New Hazard Label Symbols Explained
Orange is Out. Red is In! These symbols are being replaced by others because the law on chemical classification and labelling has recently changed. New symbols, different shape Be sure to read the labels!

8 Hazard Symbols & CLP CLP = Chemical Labelling & Packaging
New regs, global harmonisation

9 Irritant Chemicals This is the least harmful of all categories.
Looks scary, not really Legislation is now broader – e.g washing up liquids are ‘irritant’

10 Corrosive Chemicals Do you need to worry?
Products with high levels of detergents are now included in this category - although the products themselves have not changed in any way. Anything over 3% detergent: which would also include hair shampoo if it wasn’t exempt! Washing up Liquid, Kleenall, FAD and Bacticlean are now classed as corrosive.

11 What’s the Difference? Same products, Same formulations, new labels and MSDSs

12 Hazard CLP Symbols replace CHIPS

13 Hazard Symbols

14 Flammable Can catch fire…
…when exposed to naked flames or hot surfaces Typically found on aerosols and solvents including alcohol

15 Health Hazard Not commonly found on Chemex products
Usually applies to petroleum based products - which can damage lungs if large quantities are inhaled This can mean aproduct may be fatal if swallowed or enters airways

16 Oxidising Not Flammable, but promotes burning.
Not found on common cleaning products

17 Dangerous to the Environment
Can be found on some concentrated products Doesn’t apply to diluted products These are safe to dispose down the drain

18 Not found on Chemex Products
Gas Under Pressure Warning Contains gas under pressure; may explode if heated Acute Toxicity What it says on the tin: Danger! H300: Fatal if swallowed H310: Fatal in contact with skin H330: Fatal if inhaled Explosive Danger Detonators, Fireworks, Dynamite…

20 Chemex A to K Guide

21 The Golden Rules NEVER MIX CHEMICALS READ THE LABEL
They can react together dangerously READ THE LABEL Follow the instructions - they are there to help you READ THE COSHH DATA And know the first aid treatment USE PROTECTIVE CLOTHING It is for your own protection. Use it!

22 The Golden Rules ALWAYS USE THE PROPER CONTAINERS
Never use unmarked containers or those designed for other uses, e.g. those used for food and drink STORE CHEMICALS SAFELY Segregate different hazard classes if applicable WORK SAFELY Follow the rules. They are there to protect you! REPORT spillages or faulty / damaged equipment

23 Good Work Practice Storage areas should be maintained in a clean and tidy condition All containers should be kept tightly sealed Spillages should be dealt with immediately Adequate washing facilities must be available on site

24 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Must be supplied and used at work PPE must be readily available in the workplace It is your responsibility to use it Use goggles if spraying Powerforce - Bacticlean overhead Use gloves if appropriate for infection control OR if using Powerforce – it is a strong alkali Most products contain detergent and so can be irritant – just like soap or shampoo

25 Automatic Dilution Place trigger bottle or bucket beneath the correct pipe Depress the button Let go of button when full Same strength every time

26 What would you do if you saw this?
Summary READ THE LABEL Understand the risks Know where the COSHH data is kept Use the PPE Work safely and sensibly It’s for your protection – and those around you What would you do if you saw this?
