What is an Automated Stove?
Measures room temperature and adjusts firing rate according to heat demand? User requests output rate (somehow) and controls adjust to optimize burn conditions in response to this request? Stove has no user input and runs at a variable burn rate and with varied primary and secondary air conditions to achieve optimal conditions?

Current Approach to Testing for Certification
Test at defined burn rates Weighted average over these burn rates Does this work with automated stoves? Can we balance the goals of making fair comparisons between technologies and testing in a way which reflects actual field operation? e.g. a manual stove must test at a low burn rate but if an automated stove can never run in a low burn rate should it be tested there?

Category 1 – Thermostat Controlled
Should be tested at different burn rates because the stove will operate there. – So simple approach is require manual overide and test as normal; But! What if the control does not allow operation at a firing rate as low as a manual stove? – test at lowest controlled point?

Category 2 – User requested output rate
Input could, for example be a combustion chamber temperature. Actual burn rate in response to this request could vary greatly; Test at different settings of this control, see what the burn rate is and form some type of average? Force manual operation in standard burn rate categories?

Category 3. – No user input
Run multiple tests to get burn rate and performance results; Average these to form annual average performance metrics? These metrics would meet the same limits as manual stoves or special limits need to be developed for this category? Force manual operation in standard burn rate categories?
