Lymph System
2
Structure System of lymph nodes connected by lymph vessels, throughout your body Vessels are larger than capillaries, smaller than venules Vessels contain valves to prevent back flow (low pressure) Lymph – fluid surrounding tissues moves into vessels, similar to plasma
3
Components Lymph nodes Store lymphocytes
Lymph vessels bring them lymph which the nodes filter – trap foreign particles Store lymphocytes
4
Collection of large lymph nodes at the back of throat
Tonsils & Adenoids Collection of large lymph nodes at the back of throat Produce lymphocytes and antibodies
5
Thymus Gland Large in infants but shrinks during puberty Helps produce T cells
6
Stores and releases blood when needed (blood loss)
Spleen Largest lymph organ Stores and releases blood when needed (blood loss) Production of B cells
7
Bone Marrow Produces blood cells
Subclavian ducts – eventually the lymph travels to two collecting ducts that dump the lymph back into the blood in the subclavian veins
