1 Future Direction of Network and Service Management
Yoon-Hak Bang Vice President KT Network Technology Laboratory APNOMS 2006

2 QoS DiffServ IPv6 The Gap Researcher’s Viewpoint
Network Managers, Field Engineers’ view point NGOSS NGN FMC NGOSS QoS 3G/4G DiffServ IPv6 monitoring & control Network Automation Customer Satisfaction Network Ease of use Network

3 Overview The Need for More Advanced Network Management
Functions from Network Managers and Field Engineers Customer-focused Network and Service Management Future Direction of Network Management for Customer Value Innovation

4 The direction of Network Management
The Network Evolution ISDN  ATM  Broadband IP  MPLS  NGN… Reality Huge investment to replace current networks Nothing is perfect e.g., FTTH and installation problem Trade off between quality and economic efficiency NSP invests in new networks to protect customer churn and win its competitors with a little better quality Multiple transport and access networks, and many NMSs

5 The direction of Network Management
The Purpose of Network Management Maximize use of resources and improve QoS level with least amount of resources Real-time provisioning, auto-configuration, plug and play Self-healing, self-management But, a long way to go The Realistic Direction Economical development of Management Technology according to the introduction of new network technologies Fierce competition  Transition of view point from NSP to Customers Management support and automation for the real-field workers And, to achieve the original purpose of Network Management

6 Voice of Network Managers
Too many OSSs and NMSs The number of systems are still increasing Some needs manual data input Data and format inconsistency Takes long time to prepare statistical reports lack of useful information for preventive maintenance IP- NMS Electric Power Management System Transmission NMS Service Planning Management Network

7 Voice of Network Managers
Integrated Management of Heterogeneous Networks Internet, ATM, Transmission N/W, Electric Power, etc. Management systems are dedicated to specific domains There are too many PC monitors. One operator manages many networks and equipments Unified and Integrated View Integrated NMS Data Abstraction ATM-NMS IP-NMS Power Management ATM-NMS IP-NMS Power Management CMIP SNMP serial CMIP SNMP serial ATM switches Internet Power ATM switches Internet Power

11 Evolution of Network Management Paradigm
Paradigm shift of network management Currently : From the view point of Network Service Provider Network, Servers and Customer equipments are managed independently Some Inter-domain Manager provide total network view, but do not provide end-to-end service quality information From now on : Customer focused, End-to-end Management Integrated management of whole network and resources Service quality monitoring and control of the individual service session Analysis and action on the root cause which affects service quality SEQUENT SEQUENT Web, VoIP, IP-TV, Game, , FTP…

12 Evolution of Network Management
Currently : Visible to its limited management domain only Fault management : Used to monitor the domain network status Diagnosis : Manual job Traffic management : Volume traffic analysis and capacity planning Backbone Network Management Access Network Management Service Server Management Home Network Management SEQUENT SEQUENT Web, VoIP, IP-TV, Game, , FTP…

13 Evolution of Network Management
Future : End-to-end visibility Fault Management : Service Oriented Fault Management Fault of Access and Backbone Network Alarm severity proportionally defined to the level of affected services Fault of Access Network Provide the affected customer and service information Fault of Service Servers Provide the number of affected customers and degradation level of service quality Minor Major Critical Major Minor Portal L3-SW L2 S/W Metro SW Core router L3-SW Server L3-SW L2 S/W Metro SW Core router

14 Evolution of Network Management
Future : Traffic Management : from a customer experience perspective Application traffic analysis  packet capture, flow analysis Analysis of how interacting services affect each other <Case> A company is connected to Internet with 10Mbps leased line. When n people are using VoIP phone, m people access IP-TV and the performance of both service are degraded. Q : Who is responsible for the degradation of quality? A : The service provider who sold VoIP and IP-TV service Q : Among the n VoIP and m IP-TV channels, which one and how the quality is degraded? A: ??? Q : If some packets are dropped by priority control, how can the service provider explain it to customers? 100Mbps Packet drop, delay, QoS degradation

15 Evolution of Network & Service Management
Current Order decomposition Siloed OSSs Service configuration Service order design, resource allocation, activation Customer DB Customer Center design, resource allocation, activation End-to-end test design, resource allocation, activation NOK OK Request for recovery/reconfiguration Current service provisioning process Reactive and slow-working process No centralized, or end-to-end view that provides the service’s perspective of the network resources in use and the source of any problems

16 Evolution of Network & Service Management
Future Service define Network Configuration Integrated NMS Service order Customer Center design, resource allocation, activation Customer test Customer DB End-to-end Network View Future service provisioning process Real-time process Service is defined according to the contracted QoS and rate NMS validates the network capability, and configure an end-to-end connection.  NMS manages physical and logical resource information  PBNM can reduce human intervention

17 Evolution of Network & Service Management
Future Personal Portal User Profile Customer Self-control Billing Policy Server Service Profile Customer control Resource NMS ISP Customer IP/MPLS Access Nodes Service control Customer controls QoS parameters of provisioned service BoD, Voice Mail, Parental Care, Presence and Location, Context-aware Services etc.

18 Major Functions of Future NMS
Integrated Management Application Traffic Monitoring 응용서버 SEQUENT Anomaly Detection SEQUENT Workflow Management Consolidated Resource DB Real-time Provisioning & Self-control Network Diagnosis & configuration

19 Summary Realization of Integrated Network Management
Support of Workflow Management Support of Configuration and Automatic Diagnosis Real-time Provisioning and Self-control Support of Network Managers and Field Engineers for OPEX Reduction & Customer Value Innovation
