Simple Sentences and Compound Sentences

2 September 28, 2016 Simple Sentence A simple sentence has one independent clause and no subordinate clauses

3 Independent clause- A clause that can stand by itself as a sentence. EX: John joined the team

4 Subordinate clause (dependent)
A subordinate clause does not express a complete thought and cannot stand alone as a sentence.

5 Simple Sentence Examples
The sky was blue. It is raining today.

6 Compound sentences Compound Sentences are made up of two independent clauses. The clauses may be joined by a conjunction (and, but , or) or a semi-colon (;).

7 Compound examples 1. The sky was blue, but it is raining today. The independent clauses (in red)are separated by a comma and then the conjunction.

8 Compound examples The sky was blue; it is raining today. The independent clauses are separated by a semi-colon. (;)
