4 AWWA is a Not for Profit Organization Four Governing Documents
Articles of Incorporation Bylaws Board Policy Manual Illinois State Statutes We must operate within these three documents.

5 What is Governance? Governance is the system of rules, practices and processes that legally balances the interests of the many stakeholders and provides the framework for attaining vision, mission and goals. AWWA balances the interests of members, Sections, Councils, Officers, Staff, Committees, public, other stakeholders and the Board within a legal framework. Governance is the structure that ensures we have a system of rules, practices and processes that legally balances the interests and welfare of many. We need to effectively/efficiently be on the correct course, strong for the future, aware of the topics facing the industry, prepared for future opportunities and also at the same time fully utilize/engage Board members. And then as the Board approves, governance documents reflect the Board’s wishes and motions. So, as the EC and Board approve items, the governance materials must be updated for their use, Sections and staff usage.
