1 Living Things are composed of 4 Main Elements

2 Our focus will be Carbon (C)
Carbon cannot be created or destroyed on the earth. It constantly cycles through earth’s systems by changing form.

3 Carbon can be found in the Biosphere
Carbon is a major part of all macromolecules Macro means large A macromolecule is a large molecule.

4 Macromolecules containing chemical energy
Carbohydrates Function: Supply the body with energy Examples: Sugar (Glucose) Pasta/rice Potatoes Bread Fruits

5 Function: Storing energy Examples: Cheese Fatty meats
Macromolecules containing chemical energy 2. Lipids (Fats, Oils) Function: Storing energy Examples: Cheese Fatty meats Mayonnaise/Dressing Oils

6 Function: Building and Repairing of Body Parts Examples:
Other Macromolecules found in living things 3. Proteins Function: Building and Repairing of Body Parts Examples: Found in muscle Hair, Nails Skin Other Organs

7 Function: Chemical Codes Examples: DNA RNA
Other Macromolecules found in living things 4. Nucleic Acids Function: Chemical Codes Examples: DNA RNA

8 Carbon moves from the atmosphere to plants.
In the atmosphere, carbon is attached to oxygen in a gas called carbon dioxide (CO2). Through the process of photosynthesis, carbon dioxide is pulled from the air to make plant food (sugar) from carbon.

9

10 Organisms that change carbon dioxide to chemical energy in the form of glucose (sugar) are known as:
AUTOTROPHS Autotrophs make their own food so they are called the PRODUCERS
