Danelaw -  the law in force in the part of England held by the Danes before the Norman Conquest. Feudalism - the dominant social system in medieval Europe, in which the nobility held lands from the Crown in exchange for military service, and vassals were in turn tenants of the nobles, while the peasants were obliged to live on their lord's land and give him homage, labour, and a share of the produce, notionally in exchange for military protection Emperor - a sovereign ruler of an empire Empire - an extensive group of states or countries ruled over by a single monarch or a sovereign state. Hierarchy - a system in which members of an organization or society are ranked according to relative status or authority. Lords - men of noble rank or high office; noblemen Vassal - a holder of land by feudal tenure on conditions of homage and allegiance. Fief - an estate of land, especially one held on condition of feudal service; a fee
