2. Superpower (Nations)
Nations that are so powerful they have influence all over the world, they dominate smaller nations (politically, militarily, economically)
The USA and the USSR where the main superpowers during the Cold War.

3. Arms Race
A competition between 2 nations to build or acquire more weapons than their rival.

4. Containment
To keep something in one place so it doesn’t spread, the USA wanted to contain Communism in Russia.

5. The Domino Theory (Hint: what do dominos do? Hint: Communism)
View in America, if they let one nation fall to Communism then they all world.

6. Collectivism
Stresses the need for people to sacrifice and work together to benefit the whole. The U.S.S.R. believed in this way of life.
Very different than “individualism”: doing what's best for you and you alone.

7. Ideology
Value systems or your belief, Russia tried to spread there communist ideology to other countries.

8. Suburbanization
When large communities move outside of urban areas, happened during the 1950s.

9. Segregation
Forced separation of racial groups, major problem during the 50s and 60s.

10. Nuclear
Weapons that use a nuclear or atomic reaction to create a massive explosion, Russia and the US had thousands of these (enough to blow up the world over 8 times)

11. Demilitarized Zone
An area where no military forces are allowed.

12. Red Scare
A general fear in America that Russian revolutionaries were plotting to take control of the US government.

13. Event: Cuban Missile Crisis
The US found Soviet nuclear missiles in Cuba just off of Florida's coast.

14. Viet Cong
Communist rebels that fought against the US in the Vietnam War.

15. All have one thing in common: China, Korea, Afghanistan, Cuba, and Vietnam
All are places the US fought wars in to stop the spread of Communism.
