2 RHYTHM Rhythm is the principle of design that indicates movement by the repetition of elements.

4 RHYTHM IN MUSIC Is created by the measure of time between musical sounds. Beats are followed by rests.

5 RHYTHM IN POETRY The repetition of words, sounds and phrases creates rhythm in poetry.

6 VISUAL RHYTHM is rhythm you receive through your eyes rather than through your ears.

7 VISUAL RHYTHM is created by repeated positive shapes separated by negative spaces.

8 VISUAL RHYTHM IS EVERYWHERE:
Books lined up on a bookshelf. Cars in a parking lot. People in line. Each person is a positive shape, and the space between each person is a negative space.

9 VISUAL RHYTHM Suggests Movement

10 VISUAL RHYTHM Creates a sensation of movement.
Rhythms cause the viewer’s eyes to follow the visual beats through a work of art.

11 REPETITION Rhythm results from Repetition. Motif and Pattern
are often used to talk about Repetition in art.

12 MOTIF A motif is a unit that is repeated in visual rhythm.

13 ASSIGNMENT: Repeat a Motif
(a gesture drawing) to create visual rhythm.

14 STEPS: Select gesture drawing(s) for motif.
Cut out figure(s) to use as template. Repeat motif across the paper to create visual rhythm. Arrange your space well. (composition)
