What are ephemeral streams? Streams that regularly exist for short periods of time, usually during a rainy period, and may have defined channels even when they are dry.

What are intermittent streams? Streams that flow at different times of the year, or seasonally, when there is enough water from either rainfall, springs, or other surface sources such as melting snow or even discharge from a wastewater treatment facility.

What are perennial streams? Streams that flow year-round.

What is stream order? A stream classification system.

Strahler Stream Order It takes two streams of the same order, coming together, to make the next larger order. Two first order streams make a second order stream. A second order and a first order is still a second order. Image: Jarek Jasiewicz
