2 Basic Principles of Addition of Whole Numbers
Whole numbers refer to complete units with no fractional parts. Addition is the process of adding two or more numbers together to find an answer called a sum. Place numbers in a vertical column and align numbers on the right side of the column.

Example: Find the sum of 33, 549, 6, 878, and 75 Arrange the numbers in a column aligned on the right:

Right column is added first Last digit of sum obtained is written in answer Carry remaining digit to the next column and add it to the numbers in that column

5 Addition of Whole Numbers
Repeat the process until all columns have been added in a right to left order.

6 Practical Problem A dental assistant (DA) orders the following supplies: composite for $103, amalgam capsules for $386, alginate for $15, lab plaster for $55, stone for $89, and rubber base impression material for $54. What is the total cost of the order?

7 Practical Problem Add the amounts:
The total cost of the order is $702.
