What is an Annotation? The act of adding notes or comments to something Interacting with your text and finding meaning in what you read as you read it. “Interacting” is a funny way to think about how you read a book the best way to understand and find meaning in a book is to: Write down your thoughts Ask questions Respond to the words you read AN ANNOTATION IS A LOT MORE THAN A SUMMARY!

3 What to use when Annotating:
Underline major points Circle word's/phrases that are confusing Use a ? And write out you question Use ! For things that surprise you Draw  to link connections Mark EX to denote examples, write comments in margin Numerate arguments, important details

4 Slavery, the Civil War, and Reconstruction Gettysburg and the Gettysburg Address
First Read & Annotate – use a pencil Independently read and write the above text. Use your annotation sheet to help understand the text Remember! This is only the first read, you will have more chances to annotate 15 minutes

5 Cite specific examples from the text to support your written response.
Quick Write – 5 min. What is the passage, “Gettysburg and the Gettysburg Address” mostly about? Cite specific examples from the text to support your written response. With your partner take turns reading out loud your quick writes. Then compare your answers and support it by using textual evidence.

6 Lets Read It Again! Your job is to follow along as the teacher reads.
Be ready to write something new learned from the text. Do not write during reading.

How does Lincoln discuss “all men are created equal?” *Add to quick write *

Look for any more information that DIGS DEEPER into the concepts and details of the writing. Use Annotation skills This time only 8 minutes

9 Listen For More… Teacher will model annotating while reading it with the students. Add notes to your sheet during this time based on the class discussion.

Verbal Pair-Share Why has the Battle of Gettysburg been called “the most crucial battle in America history?” Silent Dialogue The passage sequences the events that led up to the Gettysburg address. What events happened first? The Gettysburg Address shows Lincoln’s determination to have a unified country once more. What evidence (sentence) from his speech best supports this conclusion?

What is the “great task” described in the Gettysburg Address? What does President Lincoln's description of the “great task” show about his attitude toward the war? Cite evidence from the text to support your answer. 2-3 paragraphs Develop a deeper textual understanding of the text. -Clear & concise summary of the essential points -WITHOUT a personal opinion or connection
