1 Coordinated by Michael Koller, M.D.
Improving the Quality of Preventative Care with a System-wide Influenza Campaign Coordinated by Michael Koller, M.D.

2 Opportunity Statement and Desired Outcome
Infection with influenza causes significant morbidity and mortality every “flu season.” Influenza vaccination can prevent infection with the flu virus and can minimize the illness. GOAL = 90% immunization rate or documented refusal for all our targeted patient groups.

3 Most Likely Causes Prior influenza campaign only focused on ambulatory encounters Reliance on memory failed to identify all high risk patients. Minimal efforts to coordinate publicity across continuum of care Flu shot clinics inconsistently used across system Public confusion due to inadequate supply and CDC changes in recommendations Not taking full advantage of opportunities to vaccinate employees

4 Solutions Implemented
1.  Dr. Koller attends multiple department and resident meetings promoting standard approach to influenza vaccination 2. Improved efficiencies of vaccination process - Standing order for flu shots - Utilized flu clinics - Deleted signed consent form (risk/benefit information sheet given instead) - Utilized student nurses to vaccinate at employee health fair 3. High risk patients contacted and vaccinated 4. Implemented policy for vaccination on inpatient discharge

5 Solutions Implemented
5. Continued marketing approach to publicity - LUHS Appointment reminders included flu shot notice - High risk pt list created for PCPs and postcards mailed - “Stop flu” button worn by all staff - Posters and table tents in lobbies and cafeterias - Posters in campus buses 6. Prompt response to each change in CDC recommendations
