1 Chemistry Unit 7 Notes: Diffusion

2 (1) What is Diffusion? Movement of particles from an area of HIGHER concentration  LOWER concentration. Particles spread out until reaching equilibrium.

3

4

5 (2) What is concentration?
Concentration = How many particles are packed into a given space. HIGH Concentration = A LOT of particles packed into a given space. LOW Concentration = A few particles / zero particles packed into a given space.

6

7 (3) Heat Energy & Particle Movement
Heat Energy makes particles move FASTER!  Gain Heat Energy  Move Faster Lose Heat Energy  Move Slower

8

9 (4) Diffusion & Heat Gain
If particles gain heat energy… They will move faster. Which means they will spread out faster from HIGH to LOW concentration. Particles will reach equilibrium faster!  *This is similar to when we boiled water and added the food coloring.

10 (5) Diffusion & Heat Loss
If particles lose heat energy… They will move slower. Which means they will spread out slower from HIGH to LOW concentration. Particles will reach equilibrium slower!  *This is similar to when we added food coloring to ice water.
