An “ism” is a suffix at the end of many English words. It comes from Greek “ismos” and Latin “ismus”.
You have seen it at the end of words like optimism, Buddhism, racism, favoritism, and terrorism.

It signifies a belief, practice, idea, or movement. In art, there are many movements that end in ism.
One of the most important ISMs is Impressionism.

It’s really hard to give the definition of Impressionism without using the word “impression”.
Light was important to the Impressionists. They wanted to capture the moment.

At first the public did not like their work. One newspaper critic called their work sketches or impressions, but not finished pieces.
