Histology: four layers:
-Mucosa -epithelium: stratified squamous or simple columnar -lamina propria: areolar c.t. -muscularis mucosa: smooth muscle -Submucosa: dense irregular c.t. -Muscularis externa: skeletal muscle (upper esophagus), smooth muscle elsewhere (-oblique layer: stomach only) -circular layer -longitudinal layer -Serosa or adventitia: simple squamous epith., areolar c.t.
