1 Estimating Square Roots
8.NS.2

2 Perfect Squares A PERFECT SQUARE is the square of a whole number. The perfect squares can be found along the diagonal of the multiplication table.

3 A PERFECT SQUARE geometrically represents the area of a square shape.
Perfect Squares A PERFECT SQUARE geometrically represents the area of a square shape.

4 The first ten perfect cubes are:
A PERFECT CUBE is the cube of an integer. The first ten perfect cubes are: 1, 8, 27, 64, 125, 216, 343, 512, 729, 1000

5 Perfect Cubes A PERFECT CUBE geometrically represents the volume of a three dimensional cube.

6 Solving Square/Cube Root Equations
Remember to use INVERSE OPERATIONS Example: 𝑥 2 =9 𝑥 2 = 9 𝑥=±3 The POSITIVE ROOT is called the PRIMARY ROOT. The symbol is called the RADICAL SYMBOL

7 Solving Square/Cube Root Equations
Remember to use INVERSE OPERATIONS Example: 𝑥 3 =−64 3 𝑥 3 = 3 −64 𝑥=−4 With CUBE ROOTS, you must remember that the root can be negative and must be indicated as such.

8 Estimating Square Roots
If the number is not a perfect square and you need to find the square root you can ESTIMATE! Example:

9 Estimating Square Roots
1) First figure out the two perfect squares the number is between: is between - So is 3.something 2) Now create a fraction:

10 Estimating Square Roots
3) Convert the fraction to a decimal. USE LONG DIVISION! is approximately 3.4 4) Now use the guess and check method: Start with 3.45 and square it: A bit lower than 12 (go higher)

11 Estimating Square Roots
Try 3.46 and square it: closer to 12 (less than 12) Try 3.47 and square it: which is more than 12 So is between 3.46 and 3.47

12 Estimating Square Roots
Next you would try and square it: close to 12 (just above it) Try and square it: just under 12 So is between and Use the LOWER number and round:
